The Journey Begins

WARNING:  There might possibly be a little TMI for some...

Anthony and I spent our 1 year anniversary in Helen, GA. A friend of Anthony's managed one of the hotels there and offered for us to come spend the weekend up there free of charge. Did someone say free?? I'm all about good deals, free stuff = even better! So we packed our bags and headed for Helen. I've been to Helen plenty of times but it's always nice to go back and visit. We spent out weekend walking through the little town, going tubing, playing putt putt, and going to Unicoi State Park and Fred's Famous Peanuts. Let's just say you can do Helen in an entire day, and we were ready to get home after spending 2 nights up there, but it was fun, memorable, and relaxing!

Stopped to have some fun while playing putt putt

We decided to take a little hike

During our stay we came to the decision that we would begin the process of trying to start a family. Anthony was still in school full time/working full time and I would be finishing my degree that December. We knew we had wanted to wait until at least one of us was finished with school and figured we would do the whole "not try but if it happened great" plan to begin. After all the Lord has the perfect timing anyway. I was super excited since I had been wanting to start our family. Anthony on the other hand was a little apprehensive, but understandably so. He's the head of our house and the bread winner so of course I can understand a few nerves when thinking about the idea of expanding our family.

Okay, before you start thinking I'm some crazy person...I know it can take some couples quite a while to conceive. While others are extremely blessed to get pregnant after the first month of being off of birth control...and I am not one to have the best patience in the world when it comes to me wanting things. Funny how the Lord works..as you will see later...

So, with that being said, after a few months I began to wonder what was going on?? And, to spare you the details let's just say I wasn't expreiencing any of the normal signs of ovulation. I took the plunge and bought some ovulation strips and after a few months of no positives...I decided I was going to schedule an OB/GYN fertility visit. Here was my thinking: I would rather go and see if everything was '"ok" than keep trying for a year only to find out something was wrong...

January 7, 2011 was our first appiontment with Dr. Walker. It was pretty short and sweet and to the point. He mentioned I could possibly have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). Some of the symptoms I noticeably had were weight gain, acne, and problems ovulating.  Dr. Walker nicely recommended trying to lose some weight to see if that would help. Not that I had an overly abundant amount of weight to lose, but I had definitely gained a little since we had gotten married. And that was that.

My graduation gift from mom and dad were some personal training sessions with Marion Candino (I love her!). She had trained me before our wedding and had whipped me into awesome shape so I was super excited. We were on our way to getting pregnant, or so we thought. The weight did not come off as easily as I thought it would (or like it usually does). Now part of that could possibly be blamed on PCOS (it can make it difficult to lose weight), but I think the other part of the blame can be put on myself. I love to eat and I wasn't necessarily eating how I probably should have been. I'll also add for one reason or another I kept thinking in my head how dumb it was to lose weight, get pregnant (hopefully) and then gain that weight right back…and then try to lose it again.

I continued taking ovulation tests, and by this time I should have bought stock in the companies because I was spending a small fortune on these things! Not to mention my cycles were so crazy! I would go as long as 50 days sometimes before I would start. I had lost about 10 pounds over the course of about 5 months, but there were still no positive results. It was time for another call to the doctor. This time I set up a consultation with Dr. Campbell. She took the investigation a little bit further by ordering some blood work to test for things like: thyroid, FSH levels, etc. This blood work was done after I was supposed to have ovulated to see if I really had. Blood was taken and the wait for a call was on. It only took a couple days and I got a call from a nurse. She was pretty friendly and told me everything came back normal but that I didn’t ovulate (big surprise there). I asked her what I should do and she replied with “nothing, just keep taking the ovulation tests” Right... keep spending a small fortune for the same results, no thanks. It was time to get a second opinion from another doctor’s office.
